DOGRISK - research project about environmental and genetic factors behind canine diseases
In December 2009 The Great Dog Survey was established in the internet. It was developed in the Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine and the data obtained from it will be used only in common level when looking into associations between environmental factors and diseases in dogs. The aim of this survey is to find out what is like the "Standard dog of Finland". How do we feed our dogs, walk and train them, what kind of recommendations do breeders give, how are dogs vaccinated and dewormed, how often do they get sick and what are the diseases they suffer from. There are over 10 000 answers already. Unfortunately you can only fill the survey in Finnish.
The impact of the environmental factors on diseases in dogs is the first aim of the DOGRISK project. We also wish to find out so interesting causations that we can study them in clinical double-blinded trials. Third aim of this study is to collect so much canine data in The Great Dog Survey that we can use it when we are searching patients to new clinical studies.
The first clinical study in the DOGRISK project was the food trial in 2013-2014. In this trial we studied atopy and allergies in Staffordshire Bull Terriers and how these diseases are affected by nutrition, genes and metabolism. New clinical trials are planned constantly, you can find more information below:
